Copley described his watershed X-Rated series (1972–75) as an attempt to "break through the barrier of pornography into the area of joy" and the prolific series of paintings and related drawings also marked his first foray into creating works based on explicit source material (mostly drawn from magazines found in adult bookstores in Times Square).
