Mary Frank created and exhibited ceramic sculpture from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. Using clay in unorthodox and experimental ways, her process of carving and incising into the clay echoes the brushwork in her ink drawings created in those same years. As she increasingly began working in two dimensions, she translated many of the symbolic elements that she had developed in clay into her explorations of new mediums.
Reflecting on these works which are now being exhibited, the artist states:
In the late 60s, 70s, and 80s, I drew with india ink on white sheets of paper, marveling at the power and intimacy of ink, the swelling, the “flying white” of the drying brush, the entrances and escaping on the paper, the Nowness. The brush finally becoming an extension of my spine, shoulder blade, arm, hand.
Many summers on the beaches of Cape Cod, I drew from life on the beach, where we were often naked (we are waterproof). I drew everyone and my two children, Pablo and Andrea, who were young then and alive. I dug a place into the sand, so I could be at eye level to the water and people would be immense close up and tiny on the horizon. The endless gestures of desire and becoming, and the joy of air/water. Also many drawings are from memories.
Where the land meets the ocean is always a place of drama for me, but also taken for granted. Now, looking back, I take little for granted and realize I–– we–– have to act passionately every day to combat the climate crisis.
